Introduction: Floriculture was established as an important means of job creation in several countries. However, the use of pesticides and chemicals in this sector posed significant health risks to workers. The implementation of biosafety measures, such as the use of personal protective clothing, was essential to prevent occupational diseases. The objective of this research was to analyze the health of workers exposed to pesticides in the Hypericu flower farm, located in the parish of El Quinche, Barrio Urapamba, and to determine compliance with biosafety regulations.
Methods: A qualitative and quantitative design study was carried out, with an experimental and explanatory approach. The study population consisted of 20 workers. Direct observations and interviews were used as the main tools to collect data on the use of protective clothing, knowledge of occupational hazards and symptoms of diseases related to pesticide exposure.
Results: The study showed that 55% of the population was female, with an average age of 38 years (76%). Sixty percent of the workers had primary education and 91% had been working in the floricultural activity for more than 6 years. Although 100% received protective clothing, only 50% used it in accordance with the regulations. Sixty percent reported illnesses, including enteritis (70%), conjunctivitis (13%), pneumonia (11%) and dermatitis (10%). In addition, they presented symptoms such as cough (66%), sore throat (61%), headache (57%) and watery eyes (52%).
Conclusions: The company provided personal protective equipment and trained workers on the risks of chemicals. However, only 20% made proper use of the equipment, which contributed to the persistence of health problems. It was concluded that it is necessary to strengthen biosafety training, promote awareness of personal care, and carry out stricter controls to ensure the correct use of protection
